He's Katie Halper's partner on Rolling Stone's "Useful Idiots" podcast. He bummed around quite a bit before he started writing for Rolling Stone. For instance...
He attended New York University but transferred after his freshman year to Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York and graduated in 1992. He spent a year abroad studying at Saint Petersburg Polytechnical University in Russia.
In the early 1990s, Taibbi moved from Saint Petersburg to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he began selling news articles more regularly. He was deported in 1992 for writing an article for the Associated Press that was critical of President Islam Karimov. At the time of his deportation, Taibbi was the starting left fielder for the Uzbek national baseball team.--wiki
I kind of was settling on FiNe for him but had forgotten about his 'professional' baseball experience. It had also occurred to me from Useful Idiots. that I might be looking at Se 'prey' style. He is extremely self-effacing, but with Katie he is quite confident and somehow also very seductive.
But this is a good video because it captures him when he was really at the crest of the wave (before the seismic political shift in 2015-2016) and because he explains how his worldview evolved. Matt sort of single-handedly made Rolling Stone important for critical investigative journalism. But it's more than that; the reason why he's been such a good fit with RS is that his style just bleeds feeling.

Okay here is more about his expat days from wiki:
Mongolia[edit] Taibbi moved to Ulan Bator, Mongolia for a time in the mid-1990s, where he played professional basketball in the Mongolian Basketball Association (MBA), which, he says, is the only basketball league outside the US that uses the same rules as the NBA. Taibbi became known as "The Mongolian Rodman", was paid $100/month to play, and says he also hosted a radio show while there.[15][16][17] He later contracted pneumonia and returned to Boston for surgery.[18]
The eXile[edit] Taibbi moved to Russia in 1992.[19] He lived and worked in Russia and the former USSR for more than six years. He joined Mark Ames in 1997 to co-edit the English-language Moscow-based, bi-weekly free newspaper, The eXile, which was written primarily for the city's expatriate community. The eXile's tone and content were highly controversial. To some, its commentary was brutally honest and gleefully tasteless; others considered it juvenile, misogynistic, and even cruel.[20][21][22] In the U.S. media, Playboy magazine published pieces on Russia both by Taibbi and by Taibbi and Ames together during this time. In 2000, Taibbi published his first book, The Exile: Sex, Drugs, and Libel in the New Russia, co-authored with Ames. He later stated that he was addicted to heroin while he did this early writing.[23]

In still photos he actually seems oddly Brandoish.

So before watching this APPARENT self-effacing fest I was veering more toward beta or...something... There is an aspect to all this that's all a game to him. You really see this when he's with Katie.

Here he is with Katie. I kind of took this one at random, SEEMS to be more them interacting together than with guests.
Katie seems to be either NiTe or TeNi, probable creative subtype, and it had occurred to me they may be semi-duals. (Or supervisorial or activity partners... ) I've thought of both SeTi and FiSe for him but really, when with Katie (and when in still photo) he seems likely to absolutely value Se. I can't get over the feeling that Katie gets Se from him. Their dynamic feels familiar to me. Suddenly Katie is like a girly girl getting approval and strength from him--though on the face of it she seems like the tough one. Katie seems a bit mesmerized by Matt. It's like he knows 'she's the brains but he's the brawn' and positions himself to maximize the operation by getting the best out of her.

It's like Matt knows Katie is the 'smarter' one but he also knows he's the one who understands baseball.

I agree he is almost certainly high Se prey.
He is a lot more self-effacing in speech than in still pics. But this is consistent with Ne role stress and Fi polr transparent feelings, all under Se frame.
His Fee seems to be in an absolute value slot. It's not FiSe Fe ignoring nor TiSe Fe inferior. And it seems too organic to be SeFi Fe demonstrative either.
So i'm inclined to agree with SeTi for him.

And like I said before you can see when they interact that in some basic very important sense it's all a game to Matt.
One he always brings back somehow to sports. Right from the start in this one. And in every episode he makes Katie talk about baseball, which she knows nothing about. Sometimes feeding her baseball questions so she has to answer as THOUGH she knew about baseball..teaching her the art of being devious in interviews...

"Look at him (Beto) on the stage with Biden. He looks like a hostage".
Matt really understands life as a predator/prey competition.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but from what i've seen so far, it looks like semi-duality indeed.
You're right Katie seems to get Se from him.
And he probably get some Ni from her too.
This interaction is pretty symetrical, more than supervision or benefactory relationship would be, but not quite like duality either.
He also seems more obviously beta here. In contrast with her.

Activity relationship could look a bit like that too. But if he is indeed SeTi, that would make her an ENFJ. And she is definetely not that. He is "providing" most the Fe here, actually. And they are likely to not belong to the same quadra btw.

Matt calls the shots. He decides when to move on.
Matt is also having the time of his life.
