I think I'm going to read it until I the hardcover copy comes in, I'll just order it now. I think I'm probably gonna buy the Bloom translation, that's the most highly regarded one.

anthony , vincent were you unable to find a pdf of Bloom? I found a couple of purported ones but they don't seem accessible.

Thanks Anthony !
I took a look on that Introduction from Jowett.
I can't really say i find it strange. But i find it pretty pointless.
He gives a paraphrastic summary of the text, then points to a few very important things but only very allusively.
The summary itself seems quite superfluous for an audience that is apparently expected to already know everything about, say, the concept of apeiron in the classical hellenic thought.
On the other hand, Bloom's introduction and interpretative essay seems very good to me. Way more positive first glance impression.

Bloom seems SiFe. A lot of 'heart'.

I read Bloom's intro as well, haven't read the interpretive essay, it's at the end of the paperback novel. I'm on Book III already, and really enjoying it.
Do either of you, or both of you, want to have a video chat conference to discuss it?(Just for the sake of video-conferencing? Or, 'nah' and [optionally insert reason])

I checked, and it turns out that the notion of "organism" is a bit older than what i said it was during the video chat.
It was already used by Kant in 1790. Haeckel was certainly an important stepstone in the history of the notion in the fields of biology and ecology, but not its "inventor".
sorry for that.

We'll be reading through Chapter 8 of Plato's Republic and discussing this Sunday early afternoon in a video chat. We already discussed the first book Sunday before last. We're using the Bloom translation linked above on this thread by pdf. I'm proposing 1 pm NY time. Welcome new member Amy . Feel free to hop on board! Things have been chaotic in NYC (and in the whole country) and I've been spending a lot of time trying to understand the current events and where they're headed but I'll try to keep the typology discussions going too.

After yesterday's session, I was looking for articles about Dumezil and his trifunctionnal theory of Indo-european society, and, not surprisingly, one of the best article i've found so far is from Iranica Online :
