Okay! So we're reading Plato's Republic for the Book Club! There are many translations available in pdf or if you order the book. I don't know which is best though. Maybe vincent has some idea? I know, I know, you're French but...maybe? It might actually be better for people to read different translations. I'll look into this.

I'll look into it too.

hmmm...it seems like it makes more sense to read the Analysis and Introduction to each book and then the book it corresponds to, doncha think? And then read the rest of the 'introduction' after? It's very long. anthony vincent

www.gutenberg.org/files/1497/1497-h/1497-h.htmI'm not sure I like this interpreter/analyzer. I've just read through the entire Book I introduction, and it seems as if things that should be said aren't said, and inessentials are. That is to say the interpreter is relaying the details as they happen throughout each part, relevant to the ideas or not, but still missing more relevant ones...or just, saying them strangely. If you read it you should see what I mean. I plan on just finishing the introduction here and in the meantime, buying a hardcover copy of the book(I haven't decided which, yet).

According to TwFP, Cooper is a good interpreter. I might buy his "complete works."

Actually Jowett will do, I suppose. I'll follow along and read the intro/analysis for each book, and then the book itself, since you guys are doing that. Then I'll buy the hardcover copy just to have it in my hands.

It seems as though Book I doesn't actually answer the question of what justice is, but rather points to the question. I've gathered from this that 'justice,' in a sense, answers itself. I'm already seeing plato's forms here, in that pointing to the 'form' of justice, leads it to answer itself. The dialogue seems to be a dissemination, or a breaking down, of the manifestations of justice - pointing to it's parts, constituents. But the sum of those parts, doesn't actually define justice. Justice defines justice.
Plato was a goddamn alien wasn't he...

Then I'll buy the hardcover copy just to have it in my hands. Well, I don't know. Jowett wrote in 1888 apparently, and made several revised version, which it seems the 'transcriber' combined. We don't have to read his. There are others online too. You're the one who did the work on this one so far, so you decide.
