Two things occur to me:
First, French has two words for "finding": for what hasn't already been in one's possession and what has not (trouver/rétrouver), although the distinction isn't always made clear. English doesn't and works around it.
Second, if you had SAID to me that you have to find the quotes again it probably would have worked fine, because there'd have been an emotional content in your tone, gestures, etc. implying sense of loss, nostalgia, passage of time, irony of forgetting, difficulty of looking....so SOME kind of 'loss'.
In the context of the tending toward jargon language here it didn't quiiiite work...but if you hadn't made the other mistake I might not have even noticed this or if I had, probably wouldn't have bothered to point it out...
This case is most interesting to me. I was very good at and very motivated about teaching really advanced English, such as the phrasal verbs....I might blab on about this a bit more...
